On Sunday, Virtual Computer lost a colleague and dear friend, Alex Vasilevsky, following a long battle with cancer.  Alex co-founded Virtual Computer in 2007 and served as our chief technology officer.  A great deal of the vision and technology behind NxTop originated with Alex, and for much of our company’s journey whenever we faced seemingly impossible technology challenges, Alex’s vision, intelligence, resourcefulness, and dedication inevitably led us through to the other side....

Greetings from Chicago, where we just wrapped up an action-packed three days at BriForum 2010, Brian Madden's annual gathering of some of the sharpest minds in desktop virtualization.  BriForum is really more of a technical symposium than a traditional vendor "trade show," so we left the usual marketing gimicks at home and just had fun geeking out with our latest code, including a sneak peak at NxTop Connect. We also chose BriForum as the venue for what I actually think is the most signficant...

Interest in bare-metal client hypervisor technology has never been higher.  With the recent release of the Citrix XenClient preview at Citrix Synergy 2010, an unprecedented number of IT professionals are investigating, testing, and sharing their thoughts on client hypervisors.  While excitement is very high, many are wondering when client hypervisor technology will be mature enough for production use.  My answer: it's already there. I am pleased to bring you the first episode of our NxTop Radio...

Earlier this week, The 451 Group released a report entitled “Virtual Computer wins the race for bare-metal client virtualization” that includes their take on our recent NxTop 2.0 release, as well as a snapshot of current industry activity around client-side virtualization. It is very gratifying to see the fruits of our hard work with NxTop 2.0 recognized by a respected industry expert like Rachel Chalmers, but even more gratifying is the growing industry recognition of something we have known...

This morning, we were pleased to announce NxTop 2.0, further extending Virtual Computer’s lead in client-side desktop virtualization.  While we have released several updates to NxTop since our 1.0 release early last year, 2.0 is significant for us for several key reasons: 1.      It’s the first “bare-metal” client virtualization product that is ready for mainstream adoption. Getting a bare-metal hypervisor to install on PC and execute one or more virtual machines is not very difficult.  We are...

In my last post, I got on a bit of roll about how the various industry players are approaching client hypervisor hardware compatibility (or not as the case may be).  Now that I have that out of my system, I thought I would begin to describe some of the things I believe we did right with our approach for NxTop.  I’ll start with a big one: NxTop is compatible with, but does not require, Intel vPro and VT-d. Several of the other client hypervisor products in works are being centered on Intel vPro...

It was good fun winding down 2009 with a spirited debate over on BrianMadden.com about the future prospects of type-1 client hypervisor technology. A topic that came up that I feel warrants a bit more commentary is hardware compatibility for client hypervisors. As I look back in the rearview mirror at two-plus years of talking with IT professionals and industry analysts about client hypervisor technology, hardware compatibility is by far the topic that has generated the most questions. It isn'...

Yesterday, we announced an update pack for the NxTop 1.2 release that set the world on fire at VMworld back in August. NxTop 1.2 was really more than a point release for us, since we added some fairly significant improvements to the product. Notable among them were seamless integration of our NxTop Center management system with Windows Server 2008 w/Hyper-V and one-to-many management capabilities for Windows 7 a good two months before it reached general retail availability. In the time since...

With less than a week to go until VMworld, life has been pretty exciting around the Virtual Computer offices as we put the final polish on our latest NxTop product functionality demos.  Today, the excitement level reached a fever pitch, as we announced our new “Get Smart About Desktop Virtualization” program that will formally kick off at VMworld.  The “Get Smart” program will highlight how a PC management approach that leverages client-side virtualization provides significant cost-saving...
