Installing Applications on a NxTop

In addition to an operating system, a NxTop can include applications.  Applications on the NxTop that require a license must use a volume license.

There are two ways to add an application to NxTop:

Using virtualized applications provides flexibility in assigning applications to users, and minimizes the size of the NxTop image since the application is not part of the image.

Virtualized applications can be assigned to a

  • NxTop, affecting all users assigned to that NxTop or
  • NxTop assigned to a group, affecting only members of the group or
  • NxTop assigned to a specific users

Some virtualized applications require a virtualization agent on the NxTop to create and run virtualized applications. Currently, NxTop supports Xenocode, which does not require installation of an agent, and Symantec Endpoint Virtualization Suite, which does. See Symantec Endpoint Virtualization Suite for more information about using this tool.

Installing an application on the NxTop's console adds the application to the NxTop's image, which increases the size of the image. It also provides the application to every user assigned to that NxTop,

Overrides

The navigation tree lists NxTops assigned to a user or group under the group or user name. The summary page for the user or group lists whether they are defined to use the NxTop's (default) set of virtual applications and policies or a customized set.

  • A virtual application assignment for the NxTop can be overridden by a virtual application assignment at a group level or at a user level.
  • A virtual application assignment at a group level can be overridden by virtual application assignment at a user level.

Adding a Virtualized Application

Note that a virtualization tool is required to create and (depending on the tool) run a virtualized application. A NxTop must include any agent required for a virtualized application.

If you are using Symantec Endpoint Virtualization Suite, be sure that the NxTop includes an installed agent. If the agent is not installed, the virtualized applications cannot run.

Steps

1.

Click on All NxTops in the navigation panel.

2.

Find the NxTop to assign on the navigation tree under all NxTops (or Groups or Users) and select it

To add a Virtual application for …

Click on the NxTop name under …

All users of a NxTop NxTops navigation branch
All users of a NxTop in a Group Users & Groups > Groups > group name
A specific user of a NxTop Users & Groups > Groups > user name
3.

Click the Modify action.

This allows you to change the NxTop.

4.

Click the Application tab.

The tab lists any Virtualized Applications.  Those already assigned to the NxTop are marked with a filled checkbox.

5.

If you are changing the Virtual Application assignments from a NxTop default, Group- or User-level override to another option (of these three), you must first select which override you are selecting using the dropdown at the upper right of the main panel:

override dropdown

6.

Virtual Applications

Fill the check boxes of the virtual applications to assign to the NxTop.

7.

When you are finished adding applications, click Save Save button.

When the NxTop next connects to the NxTop center, the virtualized application is downloaded by the NxTop Engine, and available to the User when the NxTop is next rebooted. There is no need to republish the NxTop.

Installing an Application On a NxTop Image

Adding an application manually at the console desktop to installs the application in the NxTop image. When this updated NxTop is published, and all users of the NxTop receive the new application with the update.

1.

Click on All NxTops in the navigation panel.

2.

Find the NxTop under the Shared or Custom folder and select it.

3.

Click Start to begin the virtual desktop.

Click in the console panel to use the virtual desktop.

4.

Install the application manually.  The virtual desktop needs to be able to access the installation media.

You can also install from an ISO file. See Attaching an ISO File to a NxTop.

If the application requires a license, use a volume license that covers the total number of users of the NxTops using the license.

5.

When you are finished adding applications, shutdown Windows normally, which stops the NxTop.

6.

Publish the updated NxTop to make it available to users.

When the updated NxTop is downloaded by users, it will include the added application.

Installing Applications Directly on Client Computers

Users can install applications on their individual computers (running a NxTop) but these applications will only persist on a Custom NxTop.

  • A Shared NxTop does not preserve any changes made to the system disk, including the registry.
  • A Custom NxTop retains local operating system changes and does not automatically update its base image, and it will preserve a directly installed application.
