Assign a Virtual Machine - Advanced Details

The following sections add detail about assigning a virtual machine (VM).

Domain Users and Virtual Machines vs. Non-Domain Users and Virtual Machines

  • Domain Users (users imported from Active Directory) must be assigned to a VM registered in that domain. If no VMs are registered to a user's domain, NxTop Center displays "No Domain VMs available"
  • Non-domain (local) users can be assigned to either domain or non-domain VMs. If assigned to a domain VM, a local (non-domain) user account is created for the user within the VM.

Local vs. Domain NxTopsIf the Summary tab for a VM includes the name of the domain, the deployed version of the VM is a member of the domain. To see the Summary tab, select Virtual Machines in the navigation panel and click on the VM name.

VMs can be added or removed from a domain. If you add a VM to a domain, it becomes a domain VM when it is next published. However, a non-domain version cannot be selected for deployment if the VM is assigned to any domain users.

Assigning Virtual Machines to a Group

VMs can be assigned to either a group or to individual users.

Each individual user can be assigned one at a time through the VM User interface. If a number of users who will use the same Vm are made members of a group, the VM can be assigned to the group - and then each member of the group is assigned the VM in one action.

Deleting a group does not delete users that are members of the Group, but it does remove the assignment of VMs assigned through the Group. The user can be re-assigned as an individual or as a member of another group. See Deleting a Group for more information.

Assigning Policies and Applications

Policies and virtualized applications can be assigned to VMs, which are assigned to groups and users. Generally, users inherit the policies and virtualized applications assigned to the VM. However, this assignment can be overridden at both the group and user level.

For example, if a VM is assigned a weekly backup policy, but one user or team assigned to that VM has particularly critical work, that user or team (group) could be assigned a daily backup policy, which would override the VM's policy for the selected users without affecting other users of that VM.

  • Group assignments override VM assignments
  • User assignments override VM and group assignments
