Assigning Policies to a Virtual Machine
Policies control various aspects of how a virtual machine (VM) performs. Policies are defined in the NxTop Center, and then assigned to VMs. A VM can only be assigned one of each type of policy at a time. If you modify a policy that is in use, the updated policy goes into effect immediately. VMs assigned that policy change their behavior to conform to the policy at the next contact with NxTop Center.
Note that some behaviors only act at VM start up or shut down.
There are six types of policies:
| Expiration | Describes how long after initial use a VM expires |
| USB Filter | Describes which types of USB devices can be used on the VM |
| Back-up | Describes whether and how often automatic back-up is performed and how long back-ups will be retained |
| Lockout | Describes how long the computer can be out of contact with NxTop Center before locking users out of the VM |
| OS Profile | Describes a set of rules for special handling of the folders or registry values for applications, services, or settings |
| Engine |
Defines aspects of the behavior of the NxTop Engine; click here for the steps to assign an Engine policy to a user or group |
For more details about policies, see Policy Descriptions.
A policy must be created before it can be assigned to a VM for use. See Creating Policies for more details.
Overrides for Users
A user or group can have customized policies that override the policies assigned to the VM image.
- A policy assigned to a VM can be overridden by a policy assigned to a VM at a group level or at a user level.
- A policy assigned to a VM at a group level can be overridden by a policy assigned to a VM at a user level.
Other than the Default Engine policy, all Engine policies are assigned to a group or user as an override of the Default policy. Engine policies cannot be assigned to a VM.
Assigning or Changing a Policy on a Virtual Machine
To assign a policy to a VM, group or user (click here for assigning an Engine policy):

Step One
Select the VM in the Navigation panel.
| To change a policy for … | Click on the VM name under … |
| All users of a VM | VMs navigation branch |
| All users of a VM in a Group | Groups & Users > Groups > group name |
| A specific user of a VM | Groups & Users > Groups > user name |
Step Two
Click Modify. The data displayed in the tabs can be modified.

Step Three
Click the Policies tab. The selected policies are displayed in the main panel.

Step Four
If you are changing a policy from a VM default, Group- or User-level override to another option (of these three), you must first select which override you are selecting using the dropdown at the upper right of the main panel:
Select the new or changed policy from the dropdown list for the type of policy you want to change.
You can change as many policies as needed. See the Policy Descriptions for details about each policy.
Step Five
Click Save at the right corner of the main panel.
The updated policy appears on the Policies tab for the selected VM. The updated policy is sent to the affected computers when they next contact NxTop Center.
