Importing Users and Groups from Active Directory

If your organization uses Active Directory, you can import the users and user groups into NxTop Center. This ensures that your organization remains consistent and saves the extra time and effort that would be used to re-enter and maintain the users in NxTop Center.

Repeat this task periodically to keep NxTop Center synchronized with your Active Directory.

Import the AD Users into NxTop Center

The Users, Groups, and Computers defined on the Active Directory are listed in NxTop Center. Users and Groups are listed with blue icons, as opposed to local (defined directly on the server) users and groups that have orange icons.

Steps

  1. Click on the Groups and Users navigation tree.
  2. Click the Import action. The Import Users from AD wizard opens.
  3. Click on the Active Directory tab. The Active directory data panel appears.Active Directory Configuration Tab
  4. Complete the import pop-up:
    • Enter the account name and password for an account with authorization to import from the AD server.
    • Optionally, enter a User filter and/or a Group filter.
The filter is a text string. If used, all groups or users are checked against the string and only those that match are imported. A filter can include an asterisk as wild card in any position in the string, including the beginning and the end.
      • The Group filter is checked against the Group name and description
      • The User filter is checked against the user name or user account.
    • Click Next.  A comparison between the AD and the listed users appears:

    • To select which changes to import from the Groups and Users in AD:
      1. Clear the Auto Install checkbox and click Finish.
Click OK in the Confirmation pop-up.
      2. Click Groups and Users > Imports on the navigation panel. The main panel includes tabs for a variety of changes of status for groups and users imported from AD:
        • New Groups
        • Changed Groups
        • Restored Groups
        • Removed Groups

      3. Click the Modify action.
      4. On the New Groups tab and/or the New User tab, fill the checkboxes for those groups and users you want to import from Active Directory. See the table below for the other effects of imported AD data on a NxTop user account
      5. Click Save (Save) to import any selected groups and users.

Collisions and Conflicts

The administrator may also receive messages about collisions or conflicts. In these cases, NxTop cannot automatically determine which accounts to create. In such cases, clarify the issue in AD and import again.

Note: NxTop Center creates user accounts based on SIDs (security ID) from Active Directory. This avoids most collisions and conflicts.
