Migrating a User Between Virtual Machines

You can migrate a domain user between two virtual machines (VMs) that use the same operating system - for example, between two Windows XP VMs or two Vista VMs.

Because a Shared VM separates the system data from user data, a user can migrate to another base image, carrying along all existing user data (Documents and Settings and any customizations of their environment or policies) to a different VM base image built on the same operating system.

Migrating a user unassigns the user from their current VM and assigns the user to the new VM. The old VMis removed from the user's computer, and the new VM and the user's backup is loaded onto the new VM.

Have the user perform a backup of the VM just before using the Migrate action to ensure moving all of the user's data. If the user has information on the local disk that he or she wants to keep, it should be moved to the user disk and included in a backup.

You can migrate a user between two computers by unregistering the user from one computer and then registering another computer. See Unregistering a Computer for more information.

At this time, to use the Migrate action, the user

  • Must be a domain user
  • Must migrate between domain VMs with the same operating system (the VMs do not have to be members of the same domain)
  • Must migrate from a shared VMloading graphic

Step One

Step One

Click on Users & Groups > Users in the navigation panel, then click on the user, and select the VM to be migrated.

Step Two

Step Two

Click the Migrate User Disk action.

The Migrate wizard opens in the main panel, listing domain VMs using the same operating system.

The Migrate User Disk action is only available for shared VMs.

Step Three

Step Three

Fill the Assign checkbox of the VM to which the user will migrate.

Step Four

Click Finish.

When the user's computer next contacts NxTop Center, the new VM is downloaded and prepared, and the user's backup is restored from the previous VM. The previous VM is removed.
