Modify a Virtual Machine: Overview

Once you have created a virtual machine (VM), you can modify it as your organization's needs change. If you modify a VM, the updates are sent to users assigned to a shared VM automatically as described below.

Modifications to a VM fall into three categories:

  • Changes to the attributes of the VM - changes made in the definition of the VM. Make these changes using actions, and propagate to users by the Publish action. Affects all assigned users. These may include:
    • Number of CPUs
    • RAM allocation
    • increasing the size of the system disk (using the Expand action)
    • VM's hostname
  • Changes to the virtual machine - changes made in the Guest OS. Make these changes by running the VM in the NxTop Center Console and propagate to all users by the Publish action. Affects all assigned users. These may include
  • Changes to how VMs behave with users and computers. Make these changes by using the Modify action on the list of affected users for the VM, policy or virtual application. This does not require the Publish action. These changes can be targeted to affect all assigned users, specific groups, or specific users. These may include:
    • User and group assignments
    • Policies
    • Virtual Applications

Check that the system disk has enough space remaining for any additions. Exceeding the system disk size can corrupt the VM.

Additions to the base image increase the size of the base image, and lengthen its download time. NxTop supports Virtualized Applications that are not added to the VM image, and provide assignment control at a VM, group or individual user level. Changes through assignment do not require republishing the VM to deploy to assigned users.
