Removing a Computer from NxTop Center
There are two slightly different actions that can be used to remove a computer from NxTop Center: Kill and Delete.
- Delete removes the computer from NxTop Center but causes no action on the computer. It leaves the user and any virtual machines (VMs) and backups in place, but severs the relationship between the user and the registered computer in NxTop Center. Delete does not communicate with the computer. A computer that has been deleted can be registered as a new computer.
- Kill severs the relationship between the user and the computer and erases the computer's hard disk. Kill instructs the computer to remove any VMs, virtual applications, policies, user data, and the NxTop Engine from the computer. The computer then appears in the "Lost or Stolen Computer" folder under Computers in the navigation panel.
Use the Delete action to re-purpose a computer. After deleting a computer from the NxTop Center database, NxTop Center can register it as a new computer without reinstalling the NxTop Engine. You can use the Delete action remove a computer from the Lost or Stolen folder, but only do so if you are sure the computer will not be used again by unauthorised users.
Use the Kill action to remove a computer from the NxTop solution and to secure any data on it by destruction. It is noted as Killed - Secured and appears in the Lost or Stolen folder under Computers in the navigation panel. Login or other sessions communication attempts from the computer (if any) are ignored. The computer can be recycled if and when it is found or recovered by reinstalling the NxTop Engine. The Kill action includes the option of changing a local user's password in the event of a stolen computer. A domain user's password should be reset through Active Directory.
| Warning: |
If the NxTop Center Administrator inadvertently deletes a computer, there is no way to recover this computer from the NxTop Center. It can be re-registered, but information that had been on the computer will be lost. If possible, have the user perform a backup just before using Kill or Delete. |
Deleting a Computer
To delete a computer:
- Click Computers in the navigation panel, and select the computer to delete.
- Click
(the Delete action).
The Delete confirmation pop-up appears, including the name of the computer's registered user, and suggesting the use of the Unregister action.

- Click Yes to delete the computer.
The computer is deleted from the NxTop Center. NxTop Center will not recognize it the next time the NxTop Engine contacts it.
Killing a Computer
To kill a (lost or stolen) computer:

Step One
Click Computers in the navigation panel, and select the computer to kill.
Step Two
Click on the Kill action.
The Kill confirmation pop-up appears.

Step Three
Enter the name of the computer to be killed and click Next.
The second screen of the confirmation offers the option of changing a local user's password:

Note: This option will not affect a domain user. Reset a domain user's password through Active Directory.
Step Four
Fill the checkbox to change a local user's password. Fields appear for the new password.
Enter and confirm the new password. Leave the checkbox empty to leave the user password unchanged.
Step Five
Click Finish.
The computer's Summary tab is updated to display a status of Kill - Queued. At this point, you can click the Cancel Kill action to avoid the Kill action. In that case, the Kill action is canceled and not sent to the computer, and the computer can continue to be used.
If not cancelled, when the NxTop Engine next contacts the NxTop Center, it is sent the command to delete the VMs, user data, and NxTop Engine. Its status is updated to Kill - Secured, and the computer is moved to the Lost or Stolen Computer folder.
If the user's password was changed, the new password must be entered when the user next logs into NxTop.
NxTop Center will not register a computer listed in the Lost or Stolen Computer folder. If recovered, the computer can use the Recycle action to be available for use.
